Today’s Chapters: II Samuel 6-10
Pete’s Thoughts:
II Samuel 6
This chapter illustrates the importance of following the word of God completely. David knew it was important to move the ark of the covenant closer to him. The way he went about it, however, was not proper. If he had read through the law, he would have know exactly how God direct the children of Israel to move the ark. Instead David had his men put it on a cart. When the cart hit a bump and the ark was about to fall, Uzzah reached out and steadied it with his hand. God instantly killed him for this. If David had completely follow God’s commands, Uzzah would not have been killed this day.
II Samuel 7
God established a covenant with David. There are two important parts to this covenant. 1. David’s seed would build a “house” (temple) for the people to worship the Lord in. 2. God would establish his throne forever. The first part is fulfilled in David’s son, Solomon, and the second part is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
II Samuel 8
David was a man blessed of God. He followed Him and sought his direction. One of the things that often befalls leaders is when they obtain a power of authority they often forget the Lord who put them there. David never forgot the Lord.
II Samuel 9
David was a man of his word. He promised Jonathan, Saul’s son, that he would look after his family when he became king. David sought out the children of Saul and found Mephiboseth, a man who could not walk. I can imagine that at first Mephibosheth thought David was coming to kill him but instead David wanted to take care of him and provide for him. David fulfilled his promise to Jonathan and I believe that it brought him great gladness every time he heard the creak of Mephibosheth’s crutches coming down the hallway.
II Samuel 10
This is an interesting account. David thought to show kindness to the Ammonites but in return he only received scorn and mocking.
