SRC: The Psalms – Day 1

Today’s Chapters: Psalms 1-5

(Don’t forget to leave your comments and thoughts on today’s chapters!)

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 1:3

Consider what it means to be like a tree that is planted next a river.  There is no lack of water, the source of life.  You are able to bear fruit at the proper time without fail when you are located next to the source of your strength.  There is no uncertainty or fear about withering from tomorrow’s drought when you are next to the source of water.  You can prosper because you are always next to the foundation of who you are.  This is what it means for a Christian to be walking and growing with Christ.

Psalm 2:9

This is a great display of the end of the nations – they will be broken and crushed into pieces.  I love the allusion to pottery.  Once the clay has hardened, the only why the potter can mold the clay is by smashing it into small bits of dust, wetting it and starting over.  What a great way to describe how Christ will be victorious over the nations of the world.  There will be nothing left to recognize what once was held to be so great and mighty, the iron rod has reduced all to dust.

Psalm 3:3

This Psalm was written when David was being chased by his son Absalom.  When David feared for his life and thought everyone around him had turned against him and forsaken him, God was still by his side.  Look at the three things that God does for us when were are downtroden: 1. He is our shield – our protection, nothing gets to us that does not first pass through His mighty hand. 2. His is our glory – the One that we praise, the only One that we glory in, even when all seems lost and hopeless, God can still be praised. 3. The One who lifts up our heads – when we feel helpless and alone, God lifts our heads and reminds us of all He has brought us through in the past, all He is doing for us now, and all He has promised us for the future.

Psalm 4:8

David tells us that he is able to lie down in peace and sleep.  What a wonderful thing to not have to worry about tomorrow or fear what will come next.  He tells us that it is God, and God alone, who provides this safety for us.

Psalm 5:4

What an encouragement it is that God is a righteous God and does not delight in evil.  God not expect us to cheat and lie our way to success, He expects us to trust Him to provide for us.  He will never ask us to do something that is contrary to His holiness and righteousness.
