Congratulations! You have completed the Second Scripture Reading Challenge – The Psalms! What have you learned of God through the past 30 days? How have you grown in Christ through this time? Make sure you leave a comment to let us know! Stay tuned for the next Scripture Reading Challenge!

Today’s Chapters: Psalms 146-150

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 146:3

It is wonderful that we do not have to put our trust in anyone besides God. Everyone else will fail us, God will never fail. He is faithful despite what we do.

Psalm 147:1

We serve a good God. Many religions belive that the god they serve lies and cheats to make people trust them. Our God is completely, 100% good with no evil or sin in Him.

Psalm 148

This is a fantastic psalm of praise to God from all of creation. Look at the many ways that everything around us praise Him. Isn’t it about time that we praise God with the way we live our lives and join in with the rest of creation?

Psalm 149:4

Look at how the humble are lifted up and made beautiful with salvation. Do you realize that God takes pleasure in us as His children? He has made us beautiful. It is nothing we have done for ourselves, it is through the amazement of His salvation.

Psalm 150

Praise to God. This is a perfect way to end the book of Psalms. We need to make sure that we take everything we have learned from reading through this book and use it to give God praise from every area of lives. Praise the Lord!

Today’s Chapters: Psalms 141-145

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 141:3

How important it is to watch what we say! We need to always be mindful of what comes our of our mouths. We should be like David and ask God to guard our mouths. Say nothing but what God would approve of.

Psalm 142:7

What a great answer to pray David received from this verse. Not only did God deliever him from his current circumstances, but God has delievered every Christian from the prison of sin through the blood attonement of Christ. Now, as David says, we can praise His name!

Psalm 143:10

We need to make sure we are living in the will of the Lord. To do this, we need to be taught to do His will. Maybe it’s time we start asking God to show us how to do His will rather than wondering what it is. We should follow the old Nike shoe slogan – Just Do It. Ask God to teach you His will and then trust Him to show you. Don’t worry about the details, God will take care of those.

Psalm 144:4

This is a great reminder that we are nothing compared to God. He is eternal, we are like a breathe of air on a cold morning – seen for just a moment before it fades away. But not our God. He lives and reigns forever.

Psalm 145:3

Consider the fact that God is so great that no one can fathom it. You could study God for a thousand years and still be amazed at how great He is. The more you learn about God, the greater still He is to you. This should be such an encouragement to us as Christians! We can never grow tired of an ordinary, mundane God. He is awesome.

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 131

James echoes this psalm very well when he tells us that God gives grace to the humble. Some of the best times you will ever experience is when you are just quiet with the Lord.

Psalm 132

Look at all that this chapter God does and will do for David.

Psalm 133

This psalm is a wonderful illustration of unity amongst Christians. It’s like oil that seeps into the deep corners of the beard of the priest, cleansing with it’s sweet fragrance. It’s like the life sustaining dew on the mountains where the livestock dwell.

Psalm 134

We need to come into the sanctuary of God and bless His name. Praise Him for all He has done for us. Glorify Him for who He is and His great name. Lift up our songs and our hands to give Him the honor He deserves.

Psalm 135

Examine all that this psalm declares that God does and is capable of. When we look at all of this, our natural reaction is to bless His name and sing His praises.

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 126:5

What a great verse! We know that Christ is always making intercession for us, God the Father sends only good and perfect gifts, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter that Jesus promised to sent, indwells us. Though we may have sorrow and tears, the end result will always be joy.

Psalm 127:1

If God is not first and foremost in your family, your family will never be as strong as it could be. When the Lord builds your household, you will never want for closeness and protection.

Psalm 128:2

Nothing tastes better that food that you have worked hard and toiled over. Vegetables that you have cared for and nurtured always taste better than store-bought veggies. When we spend time nurturing and tending to our family and teaching them how to fear the Lord, we will be stronger and more like Christ.

Psalm 129

This is a great reminder that though we will face tribulation and persecution, God is still on the throne of the universe and it is He who judges the hearts of men.

Psalm 130

This is a wonderful psalm about the mercy of God. He provides redemption for us out of His great mercy. When we really understand God’s mercy, we will never want to leave His presence again, we will wait on the Lord and look to Him for everything.

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 121

Look at our keeping God in this chapter. God will never fail us. He will not allow us to be moved. We just need to trust in Him for all we need.

Psalm 122:1

Are we glad when we have the opportunity to go to church? Do we rejoice in fellowshipping with other Christians? We should.

Psalm 123

In a world that is constantly looking for the next best thing, we look to the Lord. He never changes, never gets old, never leads us astray. Look to the Lord for all you need.

Psalm 124

After seeing in the previous chapter that we look to God and know that He never fails, we look at this chapter and see what would have happened to us if God was not on our side. All these things would have occurred but the Lord was on our side.

Psalm 125:1

When we trust the Lord we are like a mountain. But the psalmist doesn’t say just any old mountain. He says we are like Mount Zion – the home of God. If God can never be moved, never tires, never ages, never dies, that means His throne room will never need to be moved or changed. When we trust in God, we are like the very throne of God that cannot be moved.

Today’s Chapters: Psalms 116-120

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 116:15

We often hear this verse quoted at funerals but have you ever stopped to consider that the Lord cares for each of His children and views their death as precious? Jesus told us that God knows when even a sparrow falls. How much more then, does He care for us, the ones He died for, when we die?

Psalm 117

It is wonderful to be able to express our praise to God with a simple two verse psalm. Praise the Lord! Some times you just need to say that and little more. Just those simple words are enough to express your heart-felt rejoicing in God.

Psalm 118:22

This verse refers to Christ. He was the stone rejected by men that has become the most important stone. When building a house, the cornerstone was the stone that had the straightest corner and lines. Every other line and angel of the house was set off from this one stone. If you had a cornerstone that was not perfect the structure would not be sound. What a great illustration of the Christian’s life: everything we do is based off of Christ as our cornerstone. If it doesn’t fall in the correct line with Christ, we don’t do it.

Psalm 119

This is the longest chapter in the Bible. What are some of the things you notice in this chapter that set it apart from every other chapter? What is your favorite verse from this chapter? Why?

Psalm 120:3-4

Look at the punishment that the psalmist wanted to give his tongue for lying. It may seem pretty harsh until you remember the trouble that was caused the last time you lied. As James tells us, our tongue opens us to a world of trouble and woe. Make sure yours is under control!

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 111:2

When was the last time that you considered just how great the word of the Lord are? Do you take time to study them? Everyone who realizes who great God is will be enthralled with Him and desirous to know Him more and study Him.

Psalm 112

Look at what happens to the man who fears the Lord. All these things that you read about in this psalm are a result of having the proper fear for God. It’s about time that we returned to fearing the Lord.

Psalm 113:4-6

I love how the psalmist describes God in these verses. He is above all and over all. He has to look down to view the heavens. Our God is amazing.

Psalm 114

Look at the amazing description of how God delivered Israel.

Psalm 115:1

We need to make sure that God receives the full glory from everything we do. We can do nothing without Him. It is by His name that we are saved, thus all the glory and honor and praise is due to Him and not to us.

Today’s Chapters: Psalms 106-110

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 106

Look at the number of times that Israel forsook God as accounted in this psalm. It is sad to read of their fall into sin and leaving God. There is also joy, however, when we read of how God delivered them time and again. This is so applicable to our lives. How many times do we fall away from God yet He brings us back and restores us. Verse 48 sums up our response – Blessed be the Lord!

Psalm 107:1-2

Those who have been redeemed should be shouting their thanks to the Lord. We should be singing praise to God. We are, after all, the only ones who have a reason to rejoice – we have been redeemed from the hand of our enemy – sin.

Psalm 108:7

What a wonderful thing to consider – God only speaks from His holiness. Yes, it’s something that is implied, God is holy, but how ofter do we stop and actually understand that with God being holy, everything He does, even when He talks is holy? The way in which He reaches down to us, the way in which He guides us, the way in which He teaches us are all holy. Nothing sinful, nothing wrong in any of it.

Psalm 109:26

The mercy of God is amazing. Not getting what we rightfully deserve. Praise the Lord for His mercy – let us never forget it!

Psalm 110:1

This is a wonderful psalm about Jesus Christ. It is awesome to be reminded that Jesus will one day be the victorious conqueror and have His enemies as His footstool in the realm (earth) where He was seemingly defeated. No one can beat our God!

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 101:3

What a fantastic verse to help remind us what not to set before our eyes. Many people have memorized this verse as a way to help keep sin out of their lives. When the temptation to look at something sinful hits, quoting this verse will help remind you not to look at that but focus on Christ.

Psalm 102

God shall endure forever. There will never be a time in the infinity that is eternity that God will not be. That applies to both eternity future and eternity past – there has never been a time where God wasn’t. Try wrapping your head around that. While this can be hard to grasp, it is also encouraging to know that our God will never leave us.

Psalm 103:3-5

Look at what God does for us. He forgives, heals, redeems, crowns and satisfies.

Psalm 104

In this psalm, the writer points out all of the objects of nature that we so commonly take for granted and shows us again that God is at the heart of everything and deserves all our praise.

Psalm 105:2

Do we talk of God’s wondrous works? Do we tell others about what He has done for us? We need to make sure that we are constantly expressing to others how great our God is.

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 96

Look at the way this psalm is laid out:
Verse 1 & 2: Sing to the Lord.
Verse 3: A summation of these two verses.

Verse 4 & 5: A comparison of God to the gods of the peoples.
Verse 6: After seeing that the gods of the peoples cannot hold up against our God, this is what is due to Him

Verse 7 & 8: Give to the Lord.
Verse 9: Our giving as a great form of worship to God.

Verse 10: The odd verse out in the chapter. Simply praise unto our God.

Verse 11 & 12: Let this be… The world is joyful when the Lord is praised.
Verse 13: Are reminder that the God we worship and serve is not just a far off God; He is coming!

Psalm 97:5

What an awesome description of our God. We are surrounded by mountains, here in central Virginia. They are strong, mighty fortresses of rock and stone. Wind and rain may slowly weather them over time but for the most part they remain strong and unchanged. Yet in the presence of God, they, these great mountains of stone, melt like wax before a flame. This is the God who invites us into His presence to worship Him and give Him glory. This is the God who desires us to walk with Him each day. Do we take Him for granted?

Psalm 98:7

The roaring of the seas is a wonderful sound. It is both an immense crashing and a soft sigh. It is one of the most peaceful and beautiful sounds in nature. People often listen to CDs of the ocean waves to help them relax and unwind. Have you ever considered that the roaring of the seas is praise to God? With each crash the ocean is saying, “Glory to God! He is mighty!” With each slow sigh as the water recedes over the sand it whispers, “The Lord is faithful! He is good!”

Psalm 99:8

It is a privileged to serve a God who answers us. To Moses, Aaron, Samuel, and us, He is God-Who-Forgives. That is a wonderful name for our Lord. A name that I am glad that He has for with out His forgiveness, we would be nothing.

Psalm 100

We need to make sure that we are a thankful people. We should take nothing for granted but praise the Lord and thank Him for all He has blessed us with. For the Lord is good.

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 91:2

It is wonderful to know that God is our refuge and our fortress. A place that is secure in which we can hide and be protected. Nothing will ever overcome our refuge. No one will ever conquer our fortress.

Psalm 92:8

God is God for ever. There will never be a time in which He is not God. He reigns over the universe He created for all eternity.

Psalm 93

Look at how this psalm describes the greatness of our God.

Psalm 94:11

God knows everything. He sees into the hearts of men and knows their thoughts and desires. Nothing is hidden from Him.

Psalm 95:1

What a great start to a song of worship – an invitation to come and sing to the Lord. All our praise and honor and glory goes to Him. He alone is worthy. He alone is God.

Psalm 86:5

What a wonderful verse! The Lord is ready to forgive. Where would we be with out the forgiveness of God?

Psalm 87:3

Zion, the city of God, the new Jerusalem is a glorious city. Read through Revelation 20 & 21 again and see what God has prepared for us.

Psalm 88:1

This psalm of crying out to the Lord and begging for His mercy and grace opens in the best possible way – a reminder of what God does for us. He is our salvation. Apart from Him we have nothing but with Him we have life and hope and all we could ever need.

Psalm 89

What a great psalm of praise to God. Look at the many ways God is praised and the list of God’s attributes in this chapter.

Psalm 90

This psalm is a song of Moses. Compare it to the other psalms. Can you tell a difference from this one and David’s? What are the main characteristics of this psalm?

Today’s Chapters: Psalms 76-80

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 76:4

What a great way to describe our God. You are more glorious and excellent than… You can put anything after that statement because our God is the most glorious and the most excellent. There is none beside Him, there are none that can be compared with Him.

Psalm 77:1

It never ceases to amazing me that when we cry out to God, He hears us. He is the King of the universe who oversees every atom in the universe and yet He takes the time to hear me with my little concerns.

Psalm 78:7

This is why we need to talk with our families about what God has done in our lives. So they can place their hope in Him, not forget His works, and keep His commandments. This psalm is full of examples of how the Israelites did not do these three things. They forgot God.

Psalm 79:9

The psalmist reminds us that it is for the glory of God’s name that we are saved. Not only that we may live our new lives to glorify Him but also that in the process of salvation God receives the glory. It is no small work, God, Himself, bore our sins on the cross and turned our shame and death into victory and life. He took a humanity lost in sin and did the impossible – provided atonement for our sins. Praise the Name of the our God!

Psalm 80:19

Life is nothing if it is not lived for God. If we are not in the good pleasure of God, to have His face shining on us, we are lost and miserable. It is for this reason that three times in this psalm, the begging cry is heard saying, Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved!

Pete’s Thoughts

Psalm 71:1

How great is it that we put our trust in the Lord. We do not put our trust in an idol of wood or stone that can’t hear us. We do not put our trust in a small god who cannot help us in our time of need. We put our trust in the Lord, the God of the universe that created everything simply by the power of His voice!

Psalm 72

This psalm of Solomon was the prayer of his life. A prayer for the wisdom and guidance of God. Even though we may not be kings, we still need God’s wisdom in our lives. Do we ask for it?

Psalm 73:25

There is no one in heaven that we hope in but God. There is no one on earth that we desire more that God. He is our life, our strength, our sustenance, and our comfort. He will never fail us.

Psalm 74

There are times when we need to be reminded that there is coming a judgment and the enemies of God will see justice. It may seem like they escape punishment in the present but of the future judgment, none will escape the wages of their workings.

Psalm 75:9

Just as Asaph declares, we worship the Lord. We will spend eternity around the throne of God worshiping Him forever. We even get the opportunity to start that worship now on earth.

Pete’s Thoughts:

Psalm 66:5

This is a great psalm of praise to our God. Look at all the descriptions of God and all He has done. I think verse 5 is great. We are invited to come and see the works of God and be reminded that He is awesome in how He deals with us.

Psalm 67

What a great song. All glory goes to God. When this occurs, and when all the people praise God, the land is blessed because of it.

Psalm 68

Look at the way David describes God in this psalm. He scatters His enemies, A defender of widows and father to the fatherless, He is strong and leads His people. Our God is mighty.

Psalm 69:5

It is always important to remember that nothing is hidden from God. There is nothing we can do to cover our sins.

Psalm 70

What a great prayer for those who are in need! As Christians, we have a secure hope in God. We cry to Him and He hears us.
